Thoughtful, whole-person psychiatric care designed around you.

Our Approach

My approach to care blends evidence-based psychiatry with a broader whole-person, medically informed perspective. Mental health symptoms are often influenced by factors beyond psychology alone, including sleep, hormones, nutrition, stress physiology, inflammation, metabolic health, and underlying medical conditions. As both a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Family Nurse Practitioner, I incorporate these interconnected factors into treatment whenever clinically appropriate.

I believe in partnering closely with patients to create personalized treatment plans that reflect their goals, values, preferences, and overall health. Treatment may include medication management, lifestyle interventions, sleep optimization, lab evaluation, nutrition and supplement guidance, psychotherapy support, or coordination with other medical professionals as needed.

I take time to listen carefully, educate patients about their options, and ensure they feel heard, respected, and empowered throughout the process. I encourage open dialogue and welcome questions at every step. My goal is not simply symptom reduction, but helping patients build a more stable, sustainable foundation for long-term mental health, functioning, and overall well-being.

Our Founder

Headshot of Becky Blackwell

Rebecca (Becky) Blackwell

MSN, APRN, FNP-C, PMHNP-BC

Rebecca (Becky) Blackwell, MSN, APRN, FNP-C, PMHNP-BC, is a dual-certified Family Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with more than 20 years of healthcare experience across a wide range of clinical settings. She is the founder of TrueNorth Psychiatric, a multi-state telehealth psychiatry practice serving patients across Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Nevada, North Carolina, Texas, and West Virginia.

Rebecca’s clinical background includes pediatric genetics, NICU and pediatric specialty care, inpatient and outpatient psychiatry, addiction treatment, and behavioral health care across the lifespan. Over time, her practice evolved toward a more integrative and medically informed model of psychiatric care, with particular interest in the complex overlap between mental health, sleep, hormones, metabolic health, chronic illness, neurodivergence, and nervous system regulation.

As both an FNP and PMHNP, Rebecca brings a broader medical perspective to psychiatric treatment than is traditionally found in many mental health settings. She is known for her thoughtful diagnostic approach, collaborative style, patient education, and ability to connect with patients navigating both straightforward and medically complex presentations.

Rebecca earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Vermont, her Master of Science in Nursing – Family Nurse Practitioner from The University of Texas at Arlington, and her Post-Master’s Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner certification from West Coast University. She remains committed to ongoing education and evidence-based practice through continued professional development and active involvement in national nursing and psychiatric organizations.

At the core of Rebecca’s work is a commitment to helping patients feel heard, understood, and empowered while building a sustainable path toward improved mental and physical well-being.

What Does an FNP Do?

As a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP-C), I’m trained to care for people across the lifespan—from kids to older adults. My role includes:

  • Diagnosing and treating everyday health concerns
  • Managing chronic conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid disorders, and more
  • Ordering and interpreting labs and tests
  • Prescribing medications
  • Providing preventive care and health education

This training means I’m always looking at your whole health picture. I understand how physical health issues can impact your mental health—and vice versa.

What Does a PMHNP Do?

As a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC), my focus is on diagnosing and treating mental health conditions, including:

  • Depression and anxiety
  • Bipolar disorder
  • PTSD
  • ADHD
  • Insomnia
  • Substance use disorders
  • And many others

I can prescribe psychiatric medications and also offer therapy or counseling to help you navigate challenges and feel your best emotionally.

Where the Magic Happens: Synergy Between FNP and PMHNP

Here’s why having both these certifications matters:

1. Seeing the Whole You

Mental health and physical health are deeply connected. For example:

  • Thyroid problems can look like depression or anxiety.
  • Chronic pain can cause mood changes.
  • Vitamin deficiencies can contribute to fatigue, low mood, or brain fog.

Because I’m trained as both an FNP and a PMHNP, I can consider medical issues that might be affecting your mental health—and vice versa. This helps me make accurate diagnoses and create treatment plans tailored specifically for you.

2. Safer, More Comprehensive Care

Many mental health medications can affect your physical health—for instance:

  • Antidepressants can change blood pressure or weight.
  • Mood stabilizers might require lab monitoring.

With my combined training, I’m skilled at balancing mental health treatments with your overall medical care, keeping your safety and well-being at the forefront.

3. A Holistic Approach to Wellness

At TrueNorth Psychiatric, I believe in treating the whole person—not just symptoms. Whether we’re managing a mental health condition, addressing physical health concerns, or talking about lifestyle changes, my goal is for you to:

  • Feel heard and understood
  • Receive evidence-based, personalized care
  • Achieve better mental and physical health

Why This Matters for You

When you work with me at TrueNorth Psychiatric, you’re getting a provider who can:

  • Assess and treat mental health and physical health issues together.
  • Look for medical causes of mental health symptoms.
  • Help coordinate your care across specialties if needed.
  • Partner with you to create a plan that fits your unique needs.

I’m passionate about helping you navigate life’s challenges and find your path toward wellness—because your mental health deserves care that sees the big picture.

An Integrative Perspective on Mental Health

Mental health and physical health are deeply interconnected. Symptoms such as anxiety, depression, fatigue, insomnia, brain fog, irritability, poor concentration, and mood instability can sometimes be influenced by underlying medical, neurologic, hormonal, metabolic, nutritional, or sleep-related factors.

Because of her dual training as both a Family Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, Rebecca approaches psychiatric care through a broader clinical lens that considers the full picture of a patient’s health whenever appropriate. This may include reviewing medical history, medications, sleep quality, lab work, lifestyle factors, chronic health conditions, and other contributors that may impact emotional well-being and cognitive functioning.

This integrative approach does not replace traditional psychiatric treatment—it strengthens it. Thoughtful medication management remains an important part of care for many patients, but treatment may also include sleep optimization, behavioral strategies, nutrition and supplement guidance, supportive psychotherapy, lifestyle interventions, and collaboration with other healthcare professionals when needed.

At TrueNorth Psychiatric, the goal is to provide personalized, evidence-based care that helps patients better understand their symptoms, feel more connected to their health, and build a sustainable foundation for long-term wellness and functioning.
